How to Write a Job Description for a Massage Therapist

Hiring a massage therapist is one of the most relationship-dependent hires a wellness practice can make. Your clients will trust this person with their bodies and their wellbeing. A generic job description will not find them for you. Here is how to write one that will.

Why Massage Therapist Hiring Is Different

Unlike front desk or administrative roles, a massage therapist hire carries a clinical and relational weight. Licensure is non-negotiable. But beyond credentials, you are looking for someone whose philosophy of care aligns with your practice, who communicates well with clients, and who will represent your brand every single session.

Most job descriptions for this role either read like a clinical checklist or a spa ad. Neither attracts the right candidate for a serious integrative wellness practice. Yours should do better.

Before You Write a Word

Answer these questions first. What modalities does your practice specialize in or want to grow? A therapist skilled in prenatal massage, myofascial release, or lymphatic drainage is a very different hire than a general relaxation therapist. Know what you need before you advertise for it.

What is your client population? If you serve prenatal clients, athletes, or chronic pain patients, say so. The right therapist will lean in. The wrong one will self-select out. That is the job description doing its job.

What are the physical and scheduling realities of the role? Massage therapy is physically demanding. Be honest about expected hours per day, days per week, and how the schedule is built. Surprises here create turnover.

What to Include: Section by Section

Job Title

Be specific. 'Licensed Massage Therapist' is standard and searchable. If you want to signal a specialty, 'Licensed Massage Therapist - Prenatal and Sports Focus' does that clearly.

Practice Overview

Two to four sentences about your practice. Who you serve, what you believe about care, and why your team loves working there. This is where you filter for values alignment before anyone applies.

The Role in Plain Language

One paragraph describing what this person does and why it matters in your practice. Lead with the patient relationship and the clinical contribution, not the administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

•       Provide therapeutic massage services across your primary modalities

•       Conduct intake assessments and document client progress notes

•       Communicate with practitioners regarding client treatment plans

•       Maintain a clean, professional, and welcoming treatment space

•       Uphold client confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times

•       Participate in team meetings and continuing education as expected

Requirements

•       Active state massage therapy license in good standing

•       Minimum hours of clinical experience (specify what your practice requires)

•       Liability insurance (specify if practice provides or therapist must carry)

•       Ability to perform the physical demands of the role

•       Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Preferred but Not Required

•       Experience with prenatal, oncology, sports, or other specialty populations

•       Familiarity with EHR or practice management software

•       CPR certification

Compensation and Schedule

Be transparent. Include whether this is an employee or independent contractor position - this distinction has significant legal and tax implications and candidates will ask. Include hourly or per-session rate, expected hours, and any benefits if applicable.

How to Apply

Tell them exactly what to send. A resume, a brief note about their philosophy of care, and any relevant certifications. The note about care philosophy is intentional - it shows you immediately who is thoughtful about their work.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping the contractor vs. employee distinction. This is one of the most misunderstood and legally consequential decisions in wellness practice hiring. If you are unsure which classification applies to your situation, get clarity before you post the job.

Listing every modality you have ever heard of as a requirement. If deep tissue, hot stone, reflexology, and craniosacral are all listed as required, you are describing a unicorn. Be realistic about what you actually need on day one.

Vague scheduling language. 'Flexible hours' means different things to different people. Be specific about what your schedule actually looks like.

A Note on Culture Fit in Clinical Roles

In a wellness practice, culture fit is not a nice-to-have - it is a clinical variable. A therapist who is not aligned with your approach to care will create friction with clients, with other practitioners, and eventually with you. The job description is your first filter. Use it.
